Welcome to Week 2 of 12: What Are Your Favorite College Football Traditions?

6 Sep

Why do we love College Football so darn much?  For a million different reasons, hundreds of which are awesome, inspiring, and sometimes weird traditions in place forever, some since the 1800s.  First, are my favorites, then a list of others, with some help and inspiration from MSN.  I want to know what I missed.

What great traditions does your favorite school have?

As a proud alum of my beloved – and beleaguered – Boston College, I love that, soon after we graduated in 93, the stands started filling with hundreds of Super Fan shirts in bright (awful, but spirited) yellow.  The band plays Bruce Channel’s “Hey Baby” (better known as that song from Dirty Dancing) and the crowd sings the refrain.  And “foreva” the fans have yelled “We Ahhhh BC” in our best Boston accents.  #WeAreBC

Spending my high school years in Columbus OH, I became an Ohio State fan.  Of course, we have Horseshoe (or The Shoe), and arguably the biggest rivalry in college football with the annual match up against Michigan, almost always the last regular game of the season.  If the Buckeyes win, the players get a coveted Gold Pants charm, given since 1934, and causing all that controversy in 2011.  Since 1968, OSU players get awarded Buckeye leaves for their helmet for big plays and TBDBITL (the best damn band in the land) has spelled out Script Ohio with the tuba dotting the “I” since the 1930’s.  Of course, the crowd cheers back and forth “O-H” and “I-O” through out the game, and the band plays “Hang On Sloopy,” the official Ohio state rock song, at the start of the 4th quarter.  I didn’t think anything could beat the Buckeye traditions……

……until I moved to Austin and went to my first Longhorns game!  Holy cow!  The stadium of over 100,000 fans is electric the entire game, with so many traditions, everywhere you look.  From Bevo himself, mascot since 1916, to Old Smokey, the cannon that goes off after Texas scores.  Big Bertha, the huge drum, sits at visiting team’s entrance, and marks each point Texas scored.  One side of the stadium yells “Texas” and the other responds with “Fight.”  The crowd sings The Eyes of Texas, holding up their “Hook Em Horns” hand sign, created in 1955.  The Cotton Bowl in Dallas hosts the annual Red River Shootout match up against Oklahoma, on “neutral” ground.  And when Texas wins, the top of the Tower is lit orange.

Some other fun college traditions include:

  • Perhaps my favorite – just because I too love the song – in Wisconsin, since 1998, at the end of the 3rd quarter, Badger fans have jammed to “Jump Around” by House of Pain (1992 hit, smack in the midst of my college glory days)
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers entering Memorial Stadium through the Tunnel Walk, since 1994.
  • Miami Hurricanes taking the field a cloud of smoke, done since the 1950s.
  • West Virginia fans singing Take Me Home Country Roads by John Denver before each game since 1972.
  • Since 1954, Texas Tech’s Red Raider team is led onto the field by a Masked Rider on horseback.
  • Arkansas Razorbacks have had a Hog Call since the 1920’s
  • Michigan’s Big House is one of the largest, and loudest stadiums, and a cool want to watch a game, almost sunken below ground level.
  • Penn State does the best white out with more than 110,000 Nittany Lions all in white. (I’d prefer if they were all wearing navy and white stripes)
  • Even though they are the Auburn Tigers, since 1892 and their first meet with Georgia, War Eagle has been their battle cry.
  • Colorado has their live buffalo mascot do his Ralphie Run, circling Folsom Field, at the start of each half, since 1967
  • Texas A&M has done a Midnight Yell with thousands gathered at Kyle Field the night before each home game to cheer on the Aggies.  The first official yell was in 1931 before a game against, who else, the Texas Longhorns.
  • Three schools claim they were the first to have homecoming, Baylor in 1909, Illinois in 1910 and Missouri in 1911.
  • And begrudgingly I have to note Notre Dame with its Touchdown Jesus
  • As a bonus, even though its not college, and not even a real football team, who can’t love the Friday Night Lights players chanting Clear Eyes.  Full Hearts. Can’t Lose. And touching Jason Street’s name on the wall on the way out to play.

So what fun traditions did I miss?  What do you love best about your team’s football games?  (Is it the great stripedshirts in the stands?? I thought so!)  Please share other fun traditions on our stripedshirt Facebook page:  Or email them to me at and I’ll add them to this post!

College Football’s Most Engaged Fans Are……

23 Jul

Michigan striped shirt for women, kidsMy dear friends at TicketCity (great company, great folks and also Austin based) just put out data on the most engaged fans in college football, based on several factors from the 2012 seasons (excluding bowl games).  TicketCity aggregated up factors like all game attendance, home game attendance, ticket prices, stadium capacity filled at home, Facebook and Twitter following, all at different weights.

LOVE THIS and I was dying to see the list, so I figured you might be too (and of course, because this is stripedshirt’s blog, we will include what colors we have for you to stripe up!)

1 Michigan (maize and blue)

2 LSU (purple and white)

3 Alabama (red and white)

4 Ohio State (red and gray)

5 A&M (maroon and gray)

6 Nebraska (red and white)

7 Oklahoma (red and white)

8 Texas (orange and white)

9 Georgia (red and black)

10 Florida (blue and orange)

11 Penn State (navy and white)

12 South Carolina (red and black)

13 Iowa (yellow and white)

14 USC (cardinal and gold)

15 Oregon (green and white)

16 Michigan State (green and white)

17 Tennessee (orange and white)

18 Wisconsin (red and white)

19 Auburn (blue and orange)

20 Clemson (orange and white)

21 West Virginia (blue and gold)

22 Florida State (garnet and gold)

23 Missouri (yellow and white)

24 Arkansas (red and white)

25 Virginia Tech (don’t have)

Also interesting nuggets from TicketCity data:

  • Michigan has highest home stadium attendance with 112,000+!!!! The Wolverines have led the country in attendance for 15 consecutive seasons.   Yet, its been 16 years since the Maize and blue have won a national championship.
  • Alabama has the most expensive tickets with an average of $163 per ticket. (that’s a LOT of Tide – ouch).
  • Oregon fills its stadium the most.  Go Duck fans.
  • Florida is king on Facebook with over 1M fans.
  • Michigan has the most Twitter followers, but only 150,000 so seems all schools could get a little more Twitter game going!

My musings:

  • It took until #14 for a non SEC, Big 10, Big 12 team to show up!
  • In this survey, among deep rivals, Michigan beats Ohio State.  LSU beats Alabama. Oklahoma beats Texas.
  • #3 takes on #25 at the official Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Sat Aug 31, Alabama v. Virginia Tech.
  • Sad, but not surprised to see my beloved – and beleaguered – Boston College Eagles completely missing.
  • But, interestingly, also missing is Notre Dame.  Bet this doesn’t make those arrogant Irish very happy!

All in all, pretty interesting stuff – thanks TicketCity!  If you want to see everything:

Ready for Week 3? Great Games! GO Michigan State!

14 Sep

Ready for Week 3? GO Michigan State, Go Tennesee! (and Boston College, Ohio State and Texas, of course)

Week 3 begins tonight with Washington State at UNLV (sorry Rutgers, I know you played last night, and congrats on a W).

But the real excitement for stripedshirt are 2 BIG match ups. As a Boston College alum, I’d love to see Michigan State tear apart Notre Dame. And as a Texan (even as a UT fan) it was fun to watch A&M tire out Florida last week. Even though they won in the end, the Gators had to fight hard, and Tennessee is out for blood, or at least not to make it 8 losses in a row to Florida. There’s also Alabama Arkansas, and I’d love to see Ohio State look a little more confident – or comfortable- beating Cal tomorrow!

Who else to watch? Well out west, all talk is usually on USC, but they have a big fight against Stanford and UCLA looked pretty awesome beating Nebraska last week. In the Big 12, the Longhorns go to Ole Miss in what will be a PRETTY game (watch the ladies in the stands, Sourthern Belle football at its best). And holy Kansas State – they scored 103 points in their first 2 games, keep watching them (even with a relatively easy game this week against N.Texas. Their real proving point is next week v. Oklahoma)

For Big 10, I think Michigan will finally get some redemption after Alabama took it to em and they barely beat Air Force. The BRIGHT YELLOW (gross) Wolverines play UMass this week. The Minutemen want to prove they are ready for Big Time College Football, and Victor Cruz as an alumni aside, I don’t think they are. Can’t be too tough on UMass tho, my own BC, 1 win against Maine, so we’ll see what happens when they meet up with Northwestern tomorrow – very nervous Eagle here!

We are READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL, bring it on week 3!

Oh, and, here’s the latest look at the stripedshirt poll – the 23 of 25 colors we have for week 3’s AP top 25 (so nice to see UT and OSU back in the list!):
1. Alabama – red and white
2. USC – cardinal and gold
3. LSU – purple and white (I know, supposed to be yellow)
4. Oregon – green and white (I know, supposed to be yellow)
5. Oklahoma – red and white
6. Florida State – garnet and gold
7. Georgia – red and black
8. S. Carolina – red and black
9. W. Virginia – blue and gold
10. Michigan State – green and white
11. Clemson – orange and white (but it is dark orange, and not purple)
12. Ohio State – red and gray
13. Virginia Tech – don’t have
14. Texas – dark orange and white
15. Kansas State – purple and white
16. TCU – purple and white
17. Michigan – maize and blue
18. Florida – blue and orange
19. Louisville – red and black
20. Notre Dame – blue and yellow
21. Stanford – cardinal and white
22. UCLA – don’t have
23. Tennessee – orange and white (but it is dark orange)
24. Arizona – red and blue
25. BYU – navy and white (I know, supposed to be tan)

Let the GAMES BEGIN! Welcome back College Football.

Introducing stripedshirt 2.0! Stripe Up for Back to School!

1 Aug

New website for stripedshirt.comWell, in less than 2 years, I’ve had to completely redo my stripedshirt website. Ouch. A painful, long, expensive process where I’ve learned a lot.
• First, hire someone good, who really knows what they are doing and cares about you.
• Second, upgrade along the way and pay attention to the program you are using – Magento gave me fair warning!
• Third, always expect things to take more time and money than you first assumed.
• Finally, realize its never going to be perfect and celebrate improvements along the way!

And so, today, I introduce you to stripedshirt 2.0 – the new and improved website! It’s (hopefully), more polished, more professional, easier to navigate and quicker to shop and check out – performance improvement was the most key to this upgrade. I hope you like the new site, and welcome feedback, though asking you to be kind as just getting it to this was an enormous effort!

We also put out a press release today, on the new site, and its perfect timing, around Back to School, Fall and Football. Remember, stripedshirt lets you show your colors, for your school (whether college, high school, middle or elementary) and team in fun fashionable ways. With our 15 color combinations, we got you covered (colored!) for more than 50 top colleges, 20 NFL teams, and 26 of the 30 MLB teams! Stripe Up for Back to School now!
